Just curious to see what style really grabbed your attention when you began dancin and poppin? Why did that style interest you? Are you a dedicated practitioner of that style now? :D

Back in 1979 I really liked the contraction (hitting) part of this dance the most. Back then this dance looked very simple and it was not much into styles. After doing this dance for a couple of years i started being more interested in ticking. I evolved and became interested in all stop and go movements of popping. I love looking unreal when I dance. I guess it is something about the whole controlling of the body that i really liked. Now more people are into looking funky. I am more into looking funky and unreal when I dance.

The Wigz clip where he's wearing a white hat and khaki clothes dancing to an MJ song grabbed me. No particular style within the clip grabbed me, it was just that I was able to see vividly the music expressed through the dancer and through his flipping of styles - that strong expression and connection to the music is what grabbed me. So consequently, I do what it takes to achieve that strong expression and connection - feel the music -stay on beat - stay funky - flip it here and there, etc.

awwh man..this goes waaaayy back man....
i think its the powermove that got me interested in streetdancin first...n i prolly was ? 6 yrs old i think at that time i wanna be a breakdancer already
and then i figure im not a person who is able to do those physical moves after i have grown up...but my constant interest in breakdancin... which made me go out and meet up with "breakdancers" ..this one guy i mey he does the robot wave and float... basic stuffs and TRIX yes u kno ..I like those TRIX....i thought that was really awesome... now i look back and think of him ..i though his robot is still pretty clean... i will need to see him again to make sure how i feel now
so i think its his robots and those basic poppin tricks that got me into it...in the first place... now i hav been poppin for quite some years now..i still duno how to do em all..
and then thats the turnin point... everythings change when i met tim at moorpark...
thats a whole new era... to be continue

First actual exposure I got to poppin was back in 2001 in Dallas (dirty souf what up muh fukkas). My homie Jared was doing tuts, glides and waves. After that I got into tutting. Nobody I personally knew at that moment had ever been trained on fundamentals or foundations. It was all from random people that had seen a video or knew somebody from out of state that showed them.
I also got the chance to see/meet Dr. Doom back in TX. I had never seen strobing or animating before so my eyes were buggggginn out! Actually I was so bugged out by what he did that I couldn't even try to figure out how he was doing it, I could only watch and lift my jaw up off the floor!
Once I moved out here to LA was when I was truly exposed to poppin. I was still into tuts so when I saw Tetris and Konfusion in person, my mind was blown because I had never seen tutting done to that degree! Seeing wave-o-matic wave was an experience to me as well!
Tutting was so interesting to me because it seemed so geometrical. I could see boxes. play with boxes. I can't pinpoint exactly why I liked them, I was just so captivated that I had to try it out! It has stuck with me since 01 and i'm still trying to get it all figured out!
Glides tripped me out because seeing someone slide all around like they are weightless or floating that illusion on its own is visualy stimulating.
Waves just made me lose the concept of bone structure in some people. How can they make their bodies do that? I want to make my body do that!
Today I practice tuts, waves and lately I have been learning animation style/bopping/hitting. And I am trying to focus on walks/floats/glides (Tabo-san big inspiration for me in this area)!

The first time i saw poppin was when i went to kyo's class. his hard pops, dope style, and the fun I had learning to dance inspired me to pop. then my main influence was popkun's insanely hard pops that he would do when drilling arm pop exercises, fresno, etc and his Fx style, the way he added effects and finesse to everything he did was the illest thing I had ever seen; I wanted to be ill like him someday.

literally made me go  when I first saw it. And then afterward, botting then tutting, then animation. It's the illusion factor that got me really interested in it. And I'm still practicing although only from time to time. It's kinda ghetto how for a certain period of time, I'd be REALLY into practicing and everything and then i'd slow down for a while and then speed up again. Happens too often :? haha

First live popper I saw was Electro from Voltron Crew, tuttin at the ol' Orange show. Tuttin was also the first style I tried and my main style right now.

The thing that first caught my eye, was the battle in an underground AK1200 performance in Seattle many years ago.
One popper was swinging from invisible trees around the center of the circle, another was creating imaginary doors and isolating thru them, and one, (one of the ones that inspired my style,) could move every part of his body independently, precisely, and at different speeds.
His whole body was a tracer, and he stepped into and out of his boxes, (what many of you call tuts)

I love everything about popping, but the styles that always left me amazed and motivated has to be ticking, strobing, hitting, dime stopping, speed control. Oh man!!!, i can still remember when i first seen flat top at the universal studios city walk, and when i first seen salah, on a vhs pro am tape back in like 97. I was so awestruck and in love with the dance, still am <3 :) :) :) :) :P :P :P :P

Waving and gliding were the styles that got me into this whole thing. I still wave but i never really picked up good gliding technique. I'm a wimp when it comes to enduring physical pain when learning something

Phunky,
If I remember correctly, didn't you use to practice with Ill_Dill. I thought maybe some of his gliding skills would rub off on you. Whatever happened to him?

I was at a party in South Dakota of all places. A popper who just went by "Jeremy" from Colorado was there. He literally had the entire dance floor to himself and people just watched for what seemed like hours. His glides and isolation made me look twice at everything he did. At that point, i made up my mind...i have to be able to do that.

Haha.. Good Topic. One of my first memories was seein Solo doin his ticking joint rolling sequence back at the Orange Show.I was trippin the ef out, and I was sober. I kept rubbing my eyes, cuz I couldn't believe what I was seein. But when I started Everybody had tuts. And there were a lot of peoplpe who were really good at them. Some tutters I used to see and get down with: Konfusion, Rubik,Pandora, PopnTod Dragon,Ali,Jigsaw, Andrea, Kenny, and many, many more. I also remember seeing Damien from the Voltron Crew doin the first sick ass, evil robot I had ever seen. Many dope dancers were from then, and many more came afterward like Tetris, Madd Chadd, and Animatronix to name a few.

I think it was the angles and just the funky, gangsta coolness of it (I think it was probably something boog-esque that I was seeing...)
But also, watching Michael Chambers (Boogaloo Shrimp) in Breakin'... His waves, his glides--crazy stuff that I wanted to do ever since I was about 7 years old...
But I also like the look of hard hits... oh, and I like watching Tetris bug out--I can watch that ish for hours...
Also, poppers with really good musicality (Poppin' Pete, J-Smooth)--they really make the music "visible"--I like that and that's what I strive to do with my dancing...

almost no one said anything about boogaloo. that's interesting in itself!
for me, it was for sure waving... especially tick waving... that and hard hits.. some of my very first favorite clips i ever saw were
djp... DJ P i don't even know who he was
mr. re at radiotron
legend at bboy summit 2000
skeeter rabbit in france when they're all in black
and frantick from summit 2001.
what ultimately blew my mind, and still does, was walid... and now everyone's crazy musicality...
the first thing taht i love about popping that grab my eye was how hits and the waves.

none they all looked stupid to me. haha. i was just clowning a friend with waves but apparently it didnt look that bad and so i ran with it. i was a bboy as a little kid though and obsessed with michael jackson in the mid 80s. lol i was like 4-5 year old in a thriller jacket bumpin some MJ doing footwork swipes and poses at family gatherings. lol i even had the MJ action figure haahahah. i only know this cause my grandparents always tell me. i dont even know where i could have even seen break dancing. must have been from Knotts Berry farm in 80s when poppers and bboys used to go there. thats only thing i can think of how i could have seen it. since i went there a bunch as a kid. but i stoped anything for like 10 years till i seen some friends doing popping when i was like 15 or so and i was makign fun of them doing some waves. from there i got obsessed with waves and tuts. then everything else later on
