So Ive been working on my technique for awhile (3-4 yrs). But top level poppers always seem to mention the "layers" in music, that there's something deeper there in the surface.

I feel like they prove this when they battle, cuz they pull off freestyle sets that seem to be choreographed exactly to the music! and im not just talkin about hitting the beats (although a lesson in rhythm would help too ;)... ), but the feel of the song, the hi's and lo's that flow into and out.

and it's so hard to tell whether the music is coming from the speakers... or the popper who's battling! but i digress....sooo

- Can anyone give me advice on how can I start "LISTENING" to music from now on, to listen DEEPER into the song and really represent it when i pop... as if my body were the instrument ?!?!?!? i know there's the clap& kick, the 8 count, being on beat (im still workin on this), but that's it!

- essentially what are some practical points to avoid shallowly listening to music on just its surface? bad habits could come out of listening to music that way once i start popping >.<

thanks !

Don't think of it as layers. Think of it as equal parts that make the whole. Every sound, melody, etc... in unison with the beat make up the song.

Without rhythm, you don't have musicality. This is because all parts of the the song are so related to the song being it's own song...

Keep working on sitting in the beat, riding it, feeling it. You have to feel! There are some things that simply can't just itemize...

you have to feel the music move you. Your awareness of the mode of existence is what allows you to move through the music, become...

it's about having soul.

So don't separate rhythm from musicality. Being on beat is so important, if you just try to move to the randetom sounds... without staying in rhythm, there will be no flow... there will only be moves.

Think of it as something more organic. It's something you can talk about doing forever... and dissect and etc.... but you just have to find out for yourself.

Go out... to a club or a show. Find a place to get down... and do just that get down.... feel. No purpose or goal other than feeling the music. You will find that soul....

When I first met Walid, I didn't know who he was and I thought he was very strange...He just stood against a wall with his eyes closed for somewhere between 45 minutes to 1 hour while all the other younger poppers just went at it immediately.

Then when he started to move he was magic. If you wanna be deep with it, you gotta meditate into the music. Trying following the example of Walid and only move when you can feel the music deep inside. Close yo eyes and don't think of movement at all!

As a dancer you have to have the basic rhythm, I suggest u drill that in to you first, to the point where you don't think about it anymore, so it is second nature to you. Eventually you will get bored and want to move to different rhythms, thats when your ear will start opening up. Also I suggest u listen to ALL kinds of music, you can listen/practice to all the music at the competitions, but you don't really get thoughs songs at the club, which I belive is where you get your natural flow and find your individuality. Try these things, I belive they will help you alot

What I believe is the best way to "listen the music"
is by plugging that ear phone in your ears 24/7
you will see the difference

(PS: you will always find patterns through every song)

So musicality basically is being on rhythm, but also being able to accent the highs and lows and other instruments/effects in the music?
