Best advice that I can give to you since I haven't seen footage is to be yourself and always have fun with what you are doing! Try to find your own style. Since you have been at it for less than a year, figure out which style(s) you seem to like most. Try to focus on your favorite style separately to get the foundations of it down. Once you get past foundations let your creativty take over and come into your own!

Good luck to you DQ! Put up a clip if you get a chance, there are a number of people here on this board that can give you good advice when they see which direction you are headed!

I havent been in the scene that long either...But I do have some advice for you.

I would to always keep an open mind, no matter what. There is something to learn from everyone, and its always good to talk to other dancers, introduce yourself, and dont be afraid to ask anyone advice. Learn somethin from everyone. Dont just learn from the EB's, dont just learn from Gstyle, dont just learn from ur homies.....learn from every1!! But dont take it to the point were ur copyin sumbody or multiple peeps. Take the advice they give u and add it do ur style....or use it to develop or own style... Thats all I can really say for that.

in my opinion the best way to learn is with other dancers.

If you are segregated from others who are into poppin like you, you should try to seek out ppl in your area and get ppl involved and interested.

I remember when i first saw poppin i was realy into it, but none of my friends were. I used to go to spots by myself just to peep out fools like Popn Tod, Pandora, X, konfusion, etc Later on i got to know em, and they started showin me stuff and gave me tips. That helped alot to develop my style.

- Dedication and Patience: Don't assume that you will get something instantly or when it is first taught to you
- Practice: Practice makes better => new stuff
- Listen to the original music that your dance originated from, because the feel is important
- Find someone else to jam/practice/session/battle with/against, motivation and competition will keep you from quitting
- Learn to take criticism
- Be opened minded
- Respect other dance styles and dancers
- Learn the history and foundations
- Travel! (Syd and Melb is where most events are happening in Aust atm)
- Enjoy it
- Bite => change it to fit ur personal style

Listen to the original music that your dance originated from, because the feel is important

Im not sure if i agree with this one. I feel different music inspires differnt feel which helps evolve this artform and inspires new movements and concepts and styles.

Understanding and accepting the fact that it was danced to traditional funk tracks is a good thing and understanding history is a must but to specify a guidline on what music to listen to is in my opinion holding your self back from being innovative and takin this artform further.

This dance will always be looked upon as an "outdated" style if we (the new school generation) stay on the same vibe as they did in the 70s and 80s. This is the year 2000, and I feel strongly that we should be innovating and dancing to new styles of music to look and feel for new inspiration.

What is everyones thought on this? This is a good topic. :partyman:

I agree that different music inspires different feel (eg Classical compared Gfunk).

But I reckon for people who are starting out it is important to listen (don't have to dance to it) to the original music. I feel that original music is just as important as the inventor of a specific style, it is history.

Dancing to the original music is a good way to get the basic feel of that specific dance style. Then eventually build on from there (ie different music).

Dancing to different music is one way to innovate a style.

Oh, you never know... you might just create a new dance style :)

ok cool, i understand what your sayin but then again Funk Music is not the originating music for all styles.

I can totally agree with you that if someone wants to learn to boogaloo or pop, then Funk music would be something they can listen to , to get the feel of the dance, but all the other styles has different music that it goes well with.

But i do get what you are saying

8)

Thanks for clearing that up Danis

Tetris:
Yeah of course, if funk wasn't the original music to a dance style.

I use this concept as a generalization to all dance styles... but what if the dance has changed so much from its original form that the feel is completely different?
