View Full Version : Cali super High level poppin????
Yo wutup I got a question which struck my mind the other day. I over heard some cats talkin about how high level so cali's poppin was...compared to other places....and this point of view struck me...
Is our level that high?
I mean hell yea we got soooo many dope poppers, and the most amount of OG's in the world here, and sum crazy inovative new cats... But to me in my personal opinion I just think so cal is crazy dope and fun!!! I had no clue we were up at tha top of the charts until the point of view was made. And plus I never even been to another poppin scene besides this one... This is what I'm growin up with! I feel a little ignorant to wats goin on outside so cal's poppin scene....
So anyways can sum folks enlighten me on this subject? How is so cal's poppin scene in comparison to others? Texas? Midwest? Eastcoast? France? Japan? Australia? ect ect....

yall are blessed.
but there is crazy dedication to streetdance all over the world right now..
westcoast, eastcoast, texas, midwest, france, japan, taiwan, korea, australia, germany, sweden, canada and brazil look like they on the come up harrrd too!! this shiet is goin GLOBAL!!! WORLDwide TAKEOVER!
whats cool in my opinion is that in similar ways to how it was back in the days, there is all these different regions with their own flava and funk, and their own vibe (except instead of different areas of california, its different areas of the WORLD).. (brazil in particular looks pretty dope just cuz of how freakin LIIIIIVE their crowds seem to get!! you seen BIDU's battle?? and france looks like they just really love gettin buzy and dancing) so i think its dope that so many different areas embrace these dances and keep them alive with their own scenes..
but CALI is definitely BLESSED in a real way.. thats probably why dancers from all over the world end up visiting yall. like you said, you got OGs... no fair.. and tooo many dope ass new skool executioners takin it to crazy levels.
personally i cant say which is best because i havent been lucky enough to live in any of these areas really.. always been in isolated areas with one or maaaaybe two other poppers, so it gets lonely... which has many many disadvantages. but one day id love to visit all these places and see how their vibe is, cuz im sure each area has somethin to offer.. (jsmooth would know, he been everywhere lately haha)
..but eventually CALI is where i wanna be cuz yall are truly...
blessed.
lucky muthafuckkas!!
see yall soon guys! :D (one day..)
hahah word , even tho I dont know the answer to this question... I can easily say cali is blessed!
WORD on brazil's crowds....they get hype! Same with the korean crowds! Damn I wana go there.

Cali may have the most amount of poppers in one area compared to the rest of the places, but if you talk about individually, there are high skilled poppers all over the country both in the states and international.
I think the reason why Cali gets the upper hand is because first it started here, and 2nd since it started here, most of the OGs are located here and there are jst alot of poppers clustered here genereally.
so to answer your question, there are skilled poppers everywhere, jst a concentrated amount of dope poppers reside in Cali, but it dosent mean they are better than other places.

I'd say Tetris is right... there are dope poppers all over, but a lot of them are developed in the west coast scene.. especially Cali.
There are so many descriptions of a skilled dancer... and I think the controversy starts over the term "popper" which is mainly connected with funk styles and the hip hop version of the art.
Egyptians were "tutting" a long, long time ago...
Ancient civilizations started out with movement and pantomime as a means of communication.
The origin of "precise movement" dates back thousands, to millions of years.
When it comes to "boogaloo" I will definitely give props to the OG's and EB families... but liquid, wave isolations, advanced geometric boxes, dimestopping... I could argue about the many diverse styles and mastered art forms I've seen around the world in the underground scenes... (underground meaning those who don't "compete" at events that are more tailored for and judged by the funk styles crowd.)
The problem is, in some opinions, that the more we try to keep this a sacred and non-commercialized and exploited thing the more we pigeon-hole ourselves into a lack of diversification.
Boogaloo, when performed by a master of it, as with ANY style, is a beautiful artistry... but when EVERYONE is trying to do it, and look hard or funky doing it,... it gets watered down.
Imagine EVERYONE being a waver, or tutter.....
Mixed and complex styles, but more importantly... innonvation... should be the judging standard... to ANY music.
I'm seeing the SAME STYLES, over, and over, and over, and a little different but the same, and over again.
I know for a fact that some of THE BEST poppers in the world are unknown.
By trying to mass-organize this thing we are setting standards, (which are actually limitations and boundaries,) on what is considered dope.
It's no longer a good idea to spend hours in front of the mirror coming up with a new series of unique movements that ONLY YOU can do.... instead, we feed off the internet and mainstreamed techniques and judge those as being scripture, and not something today's poppers can deviate from.
.....So what do we have..............???... nothing new.
I am going to begin forming a crew of cats specifically interested in mastering the underground techniques passed down to me from around the world. Anyone that wants to learn, or challenge, is welcome.
much luv.
DAMN logic, verrry nicely put...
i feel u on that brotha.!!

More poppers = more competition and rivals = More ideas = Standard goes up
Cali chops Australia into hundreds of pieces! Im pretty sure our top dude wont even beat a mid tier Cali popper.... but ill be changing that one day haha!!
Staying underground or not, there are so many people who are "poppin" there has to be at least one (maybe by coincidence) dude doing the same thing as you.... but staying underground does help reduce the chances of having som1 doing the same thing haha
Its one big cycle, a style gets too popular => people do other styles => a style gets too popular and so on

Yes, I would agree Cali has a lot of the worldwide talent and originality! I have been many places around the globe, and seen a variety of popping scene's (and know about others, but not been), and Cali's level is pretty high compared to others...but...certain places have certain overall areas that they are good at, which is pretty cool: Japan has A LOT of poppers/lockers, etc. and their level in dance on average is pretty good. Europe is strong in individual character with poppin, and some good creativeness. I recently heard that Taiwan are some of the best in dance, plane funky dance within popping...the average person knows what the real dances are about over there, as opposed to creativeness, and originality. There are Great dancers all around the globe, but I think Cali has an upper hand at the original resources (dancers) than other places, giving us more of an overall perspective of what and how we can approach these styles... I personally think we have some, not all, but some of the most original ideas/concepts, and we also learn things the right ways when we seek them correctly.
It's probably because the Bay Area, Fresno, and LA are all here...
But as far as numbers in comparison to the rest of the world, I would say Asia/etc. has the most amount of poppers/lockers, etc...I heard they can have up to 600 poppers in 1 contest in China, thats crazy!!
Cali, is the most interesting, as a whole, to me within these dances.
Thanks niko!!!
its a pleasure hearin that from sumone who's definatly been places! unlike me.
Think u can drop us a few more bombs on what the scene is like in other places in more detail? that wuld be ill
