im not sure about the knee, but when you 'hit' your chest you're actually hitting those muscles not just sticking them out.
Since my chest hits aren't up to scratch yet, i hit my chest and stick it out slightly to give it that effect, but when you'll be able to hit them hard, then they will automatically move out in an upwards direction.

Im still working on my hits, so i still have a lot to learn and discover. But thats my contribution. Keep practising, hits are the most important part of popping.

Peace

Hi.

You might want to look through this thread: http://www.westcoastpoppin.com/popping-locking-forum/showthread.php?t=1724.
I asked a similar question, have a look through the responses - especially inventfmc's as it says how you can do a chest hit. :)

I'm still not sure about those leg hits though hope you work it out.

The way I was taught to chest pop/hit... does use your chest, but actually uses more muscles to create the Illusion that your chest is popping.

First of all, you do hit in your stomach, but I think that will happen naturally through this movement.

You must breathe when you do this... in, forward and up when you chest pops, and the exhale on the release.

Feel the part of your back in between your shoulder blades. This is the most important part! Push that part inwards.... HARD as your chest pops out. This will really pop it out and create that illusion of a chest pop/hit... cause when that chest comes back down and you back returns to normal position, it will come down with authority, if done correctly....

Also, if this is done correctly... that part in the middle of your shoulder blades, on your back... should be hurting. It will hurt for a while, till you muscles get used to it... cause your using more back muscles than chest muscles.

This works for anyone of any body type. To hit.... you could just be or get buff, and that flex your muscles, but knowing these techniques and perfecting them will aid anyone who is on there way with popping.

Important- This move must be done with vigor at first, before you really have the control to change the impact and/or size of the hit.

"How do you hit clean?"

This is a very common question that you're asking and all of us have asked that same question at one point. And as far as I know, no one really has a good answer.

Best advice I can give you is: Practice concentrating on the muscles that your hitting (chest, abs, neck, arms, legs).

Don't just do it for the sake of doing it. Really do try to focus on the muscle parts that you're using. Of course, this becomes second nature after you do it for so long and you won't need to focus on it anymore.

And if you need a simple exercise, just hit to the 1-2-3-4 clap in any song. I don't recommend hitting it too fast yet if you're just starting out because they might end up just looking all sloppy.

You can always make up your own drills and do what suits you.

you need to learn to hit your lateral muscles down the sides of your back... if you push the centre of your back forward its not going to be sharp unless you have control of these muscles.. this is where alot chest hit power comes from really.. may aswell call em back pops.. it also helps to take in a quick breath in just to add that extra.

This also helps your brain realize where your lats are, which is when you can start isolating that area aswell like your wingbone.. This in turn helps your waving, so instead of going elbow shoulder chest .. you'll be able to go elbow shoulder wingbone chest.. looks WAY doper..

my friend taught me some drills he learned from nam hyun joon.. you put ur arms out to the side, straight.. when you tense.. also bend your arms at the elbow slightly... it feels unnatural but it helps... take your arms up higher gradually.. so tick up and tick down.. the higher you get the harder it is...

Just drill it til it hurts, eventually youll have better hits.. isnt really any shortcuts i imagine.

The best way to get clean, crisp hits is to isolate each muscle individually and be able to hit it. If you have control over each muscle, then you wont be doing any excesss hitting.
Excess hitting = Soulja boi (and you dont want that)

So how do you practice hitting a certain muscle without hitting the others.
It'd take to long to explain each practice position. But i'll say if you cant to isolate say muscles in your forearm then hold your arm out and tense, keep experimenting till you find and position where you can tense the muscles in your forearm without tensing the other.
Then do hitting drills with it.
In that position tense for 8 seconds then relax for 8.

Repeat for other positions and muscles.
This will ensure that you have control over eas individual section or if you drilled for long enough each individual muscle.
Which will = clean crisp hits = good hitting = good breakdansing skills = Da bomb!! = Famous = MOONEY = ENDLESS SUPPLY OF HONEY PUFFS = MUDKIPS

YAY FOR ME!

I still do not get how exactly a neck hit is performed. Is it just a simple flex like a regular arm hit or is it a snap?

I've been trying both flexing as well as snapping and both do not feel natural at all. So I am just wondering if its wrong or just keep practicing it.

Thanks.

Learning to dimestop well helps clean up your hits considerably. You need to stop to hit cleanly, if only for the shortest moment, you still need to stop. I've seen some poppers hit through motions and still make it look good, but you have to really have your shit in order to make that work. For now, try to dimestop when you hit.

hmmm clean hits are contingent on control. I know when I first started out I'd just BANG like crazy. I'd get a good vibration but it looked really bad. Dimestopping like nerdtron said is a good trick. Another REALLY good thing to do is practice different hit intensity. If you can hit light and then hard and then light and practice getting that much control you'll be good. An added benefit is then you add contrast to your dance. Good luck.
