this is probably a really stupid question, but i can't seem to find a straight answer anywhere..
Is there a difference between popping and locking?? or is it just two names describing the same style??
Also..
I've just started practising hip hop and hip hop lyrical twice a week. But i'd like to add on to do a home-practise 1-2 times a week. Does anyone know a place i can find a good warm up routine, and a program that i can do for myself. It would be great getting into popping (and/or locking, depending on the answer on my first question )
I'm not trying to get professional (i think i'm getting too old, almost 30   ) but i love to dance, and just want to start doing it other than while i'm out partying. And getting in shape is just a bonus!! 8)

**********POPPING and substyles that goes with Popping************

Popping (a.k.a. hitting) is a Funk derived dance and street dance style based on the technique of quickly contracting and relaxing muscles to cause a jerk or a jolt in the dancer's body, referred to as a "pop" or a "hit". This is done continuously to the rhythm of a song in combination with other mime/robot-inspired movements.
Popping is also used as an umbrella term for a group of illusionary dance styles and techniques that are often combined with popping to create a more varied performance. The effect of popping as entertainment hinges on an almost-surrealistic contrast between the human dancer and the unnatural moves performed. Like other street dances popping is often performed in battles, cyphers, and show cases.
WHere are you from? There is homeland in LOngBeach Cali, if your here in socal where you can practice. I would suggest you find a spot where you can see local poppers and lockers in your area, thas usually the best way to learn and soak up the info~
Hope that helped 8)

hmmm... the videos were crazy and they helped a bit.. :)
I'd say popping is more about isolating moves??
while locking is more about freezing..
nah, it's still difficult for me to tell any difference. To me it's like popping and locking is different parts of the same style. "languistically" (if that even is a word  ) Popping sounds like when you jerking from freeze to to freeze, while locking is the actual freeze. But that would mean that both videos show both popping and locking... :?
I'm from Oslo, Norway  So it's a really long way to Cali from here  I don't think there is any poppers or lockers over here. There is ofcourse a bunch of breakdance-crews and more hip hop dancing crews, but none straight popping and locking. but then again, i'm not really IN any dancing envirinment yet, so i wouldn't really know. It's just the impression from what i see on the street and in the clubs.
There is classes in popping and locking in Oslo, but like i said i already staerted classes in to other styles, so i was thinking of taking popping and/or locking slowly as "hometraining" to begin with..
I appreciate more inputs in describing the dancestyles. :-)

i think the main difference is groove & feeling...
and locking is more about funk, when popping is more about control for me...

i know its difficult to see at first, but these are two entirely difference dances:
Campbellocking aka LOCKING is based around the "LOCK" which, like you said, is a freeze (into what looks like the funky chicken dance). Locking also includes various movements such as wrist twirls, points, sometimes jumps, spins, and splits but is always based around that freeze or "LOCK". Locking is all about that groovy funky feel to your dance, and usually lockers have a smile on their face because its about having fun and showing that..
LOCKING:

now POPPING can be a bit confusing because it can be used to describe one specific, particular style OR describe a wide variety of styles which is referred to as POPPING. ill explain both..
POPPING as ONE specific, particular style is contracting (tensing) your muscles to create a POP effect aka Hitting:

http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=FWhQAgdC-II (legs)
http://www.westcoastpoppin.com/playvideo.php?id=221 (hitting is popping)
now POPPING can also be used to describe a dance that uses many different techniques (styles?) such as ROBOTTING (BOTTIN/ROBOT), TUTTING (BOXES, BOXING), WAVING (SNAKING, COBRA), ANIMATION, TICKING/STROBING, FLOATS/SLIDES/GLIDES, etc together with pantomime (yep, mimes) techniques like isolating and fixed point to create and tell stories:

sorry to throw so many video clips your way, but take your time and watch them when you can, soak it in, and youll start to see the differences in the dances.
HAVE FUN!!!!!
