Hits become harder by perfect technical execution. You have to learn how to harness your hits. In an ideal world you should be able to hit soft and hard. Giving you complete control. Control breeds power.

I think to give a hard hit effect, you have to learn how to hit more than one muscle; that's for sure.
To give a nice hitting effect, relax, tense quickly, and release.

Put on some music.
Tense 2 3 4 5 6 7 8 relax 2 3 4 5 6 7 8 - Repeat.
After a few mins Tense 2 3 4 Relax 2 3 4 - Repeat.
Then get quicker and quick, till you're tense relax tense relax.
After a few days/weeks when your hits get better, do:
HIT (keep tense) 2 3 4 5 6 7 8 Relax 2 3 4 5 6 7 8

fresno 100 times a day XD
for like
a week
boring repetition = win
Hmmm... I don't know if this will help you but when I want to hit hard, I usually keep my hand and fingers loose so when I hit I can shake it to give a vibrations effect. They won't jiggle on their own so you gotta time it right. Although you should hit with your entire arm, most of my strength is in the forearm since it's in the middle of the arm (between the hand and bicep).
Also, when both hands/arms are hittin at the same time, hit your chest with it too. It gives the illusion that the hit is bigger/harder.

100 Times isnt really a lot.. thats like 3 mins lol.
I'm not exactly a very high level either, but i use the tense/relax
drill to warm up (about one song length), stretch and then i do like..
Hit every secound count for 8 counts (so, usually four snare beats) in right angles, so im helping my angles and my hits. I do the last part for about 2 or 3 songs a day, that works well for me.
Only problem with working on my hits has been, ive thrown myself offbeat..
The way i see it, if you hit to hard, you miss it, if you hit to soft, you miss it, you have to hit your middle, so when you drill, you're increasing the middle.. Kinda thing..
lol
Hitting offbeat?
Hmmmm... Are you hitting it too late or too early? I've always noticed hitting hard for me has always been too early so try to give it like a split second of time more before you hit hard. I've always thought hitting hard looks better late than if early. But if your's is late then just keep practicing and you'll get it at the right time eventually.

To add to this point, relax the wrist, and when you hit, almost flick your wrist up to increase the illusion of the power.

im no expert..but from what i read, seen, and people I have talked to...the more muscles you can hit from your arms, chest, neck, abs, etc..the stronger your hits will look.
but of course you have to take it one step at a time and practice each muscle group slowly, then eventually sync them all together as one hit. The faster you hit your muscles, the better and harder it will look too..
I remember seeing some video here, i believe it was on the tutorial section..where mr. wiggles explains that when you hit..you dont want anyone to see where you're hitting, and that is where the illusion comes from....so try working on that
Also, for me at least, the more you hit with you're muscles, the more efficient they become meaning you won't have to hit hard as hell to make it look like you're hitting hard eventually. Same thing with chest pops.

Noobs... Theres a few things. First ignore noob advice like "shake your hands and flick your wrists." next. Practice. A lot. Understand and listen to your body. When you can listen to it it will tell you the best way for YOU to hit hard. Next the more you can hit helps. Dont ignore the biggest muscle group in your body. Im gonna let YOU tell me what that is. Also the best advice i can offer... Concentrate more on the relaxing than you do on the tensing.

hands down, best advice in this thread
tense/relax tense/relax tense/relax is easy on paper, but without proper relax your tense becomes weaker and weaker, pop disappears

THANK YOU.
Someone finally gets when happens when you dont focus on the relaxing!!! ;)
Aside from the relaxing,
you have to practice immensely - the angles that you want to hit hard in.
Hitting/popping is another form of strength-training.
It requires thorough muscle development and awareness.
Some of the strongest people in the world are in their 30's and few in their 40's.
Pete and Dre have some of the hardest hits for a reason; decades of training.
You dont have to hit that long to get them that hard, you just have to train right
in a year or two.

no special technique. you just practice for years.

There are techinques. One they teach in korea.
To get the initial feeling of a quick tense release shouldnt take you too long. The thing is visibility that takes longer. Also note;
- If you muscle is contracted itll be easier to pop it.. If its stretched its harder
- If you have your arms together, both arms are combining so the pop will look harder (but you cant always have your arms together )
With the first point in mind though. Put your arms out to the side straight, palms facing the floor. Doesnt matter what your hand positions are like. I usually do mine as fists... Pop your triceps and forearm.. at the same time quickly bend your elbow ever so slightly. This will feel very unnatural, but it helps.
Repeat this over and over to a song, and gradually lift ur arms up higher and higher.. like an inch at a time... Itll be hardest to do when your hands are reaching directly above your head.
Another technique is to put ur arms out stretched, then hang your forearms down at the elbow, so you are in that outer-tut position.. and hit ur triceps.. your arms will tire quite quickley if you remain in this position for a long period of time, but this will also help your tuts stay cleaner too.... IE: If you dont feel the burn, your arms are probably not 90 degrees
There is no shortcut, true, but if you do this for 30 mins 4-5 times a week.. You should have a pretty nice pop in around 2 months.
Try it all out :).. . You'll get out what you put in
peace
