no dont do indirect hits (snapping arms or knees back and forth)
theres a few ways to hit the legs to achieve a different effect...from my experience you should aim to hit with as little movement as possible..and use direct muscle tension.. what u are suggesting is the downward hit i think..its up to u how u wanna hit ur leg
theres the upward leg hit as well
the best way to start developing a hit an area, is to first get a feel for it and an understanding on how it works...i usually do this by trying to figure out what muscles im aiming to tense/relax when doing it.
if u place ur hands a little bit above ur knees..and rock ur knees forward back ..u can see how the leg muscle there goes up and down
do what works best for u~! but dont snap ur knees back thats deterimental ..u can still hit upwards without snapping ur knees back

Hits that aren't technically hits.

You know when you see people hitting with their arms, and they're snapping their wrist to imitate a hit? Well put it this way. Hitting is flexing your muscles. And your wrist obviously isn't a muscle.
Same concept for hitting legs. You don't hit your knees.
