Hey all,

Just sharing something that can maybe aid in your freestyling. Maybe you run outa vocab or something.

1) First is this clip by wiggles & Reverse Isolation Concept
http://www.learnpopping.com/learn_popping_spotting.htm

Now this can also be expanded on. EG: the idea behind this is what you might call reverse isolation. So if you isolate you are moving 1 thing at a time, but in reverse you disable one thing at a time (and move everything else). In wiggles case, his head or eyes are disabled in someway as they are fixated on something.

You can do it how you will. One way is imagine you have eyes everywhere.. So your knees have eyes, and they are lookin at the wall.. and the rest of your body moves around it.. or your toes.. so you keep your toes in one position and move around it, then keep switching it up.. hell you can even imagine your nipples are eyes if you really want to lol

I did a workshop once with Robert Hilton frmo the UK.. he actually had us balance shoes on our hands arms etc in order to disable them so other body parts could move. You can do this if you want, but i think its a bit OTT.

2) A&B Concept
This is an idea ive stumbled accross recently. First, you stand in one position, say with your left arm infront of you, and while in that position you THINK OF (not do) a 2nd position (Eg: down on one knee).. They can be any positions you want , its not important.

So the easiest thing to do would be, in 2 counts bee-line from position A BANG into position B.. However this is not the idea. The idea is to make a journy to position B.. usually around 4 counts, but it can be any number.. perferably to the beat pattern  Then when you hit that position B, think of any other position and try get there... you'll find that once you get going you are randomly thinking of positions and you'll get so caught up in the journy that you might even forget what position you where supposed to go in...

This isnt the point... If you forget think of another one.

The logic behind this idea is that nobody ever has trouble dancing when they first start out right?? Everyone can always go for 10 seconds nad be totally fine.. What this idea does is it gives you 10 seconds after 10 seconds after 10 seconds... So it feels like you've JUST started dancing everytime (in a way)

Rather than just thinking "ok im gonna freestyle now" and you start and you finish, and inbetween is kind of a blur"... This gives you several start and finish points.

Both concepts can also be combined. So dont always focus on your arms to make your positions. Change your head or make one foot stuck to the ground. Whatever.. Alot of ideas can come out of it ive found.

Anyway, try it out. I just found this helped me and might help others.

Peace

to me .......if ur teaching...something or giving thought....to the next move...or whateva,,,,,,thats not freestylin.......

freestyling...is... turn on the rhythm...and dance.......not thought....but expression...of ones soul in the moment....

freestyle is not taught..or.....thought..............its just done....

it really is .....that simple......

I get what you mean, but i disagree when it comes to freestyle popping. Popping has boundries before its no longer popping so thought is required. You idea can apply more to moving your body without rules (not even to the music)

You cant do anything without thought except fall over, and even then a premeditated defense response would try to occur. Popping requires many a thought as it involves a technique/s.. so nobody is ever really going to freestyle to THAT degree.. its impossible because of the constraints

Your moves will always be premeditated, even in freestyle..stepping side to side.. anything... Whether its "i thought of htis other night, check it out" - or your minds electro signals telling you to do something.. You think then do no matter what.

Concepts become freestyle through familiarity..then familiarity allows expression through THAT technique.. Even reading poetry requires technique to emphasise the message.. so you can express through technique

why do you think poppin has bounderies........

bounderies are limits one puts on self......

and i personally dont agree...that moves will ...always... be premeditated........

not saying that some....arent...

but not always..........

see how i see it....is almost everyone is predicitable on how they are goin to dance...

becuz they dont freestyle.......they think they have to do something this way..or its wrong.....

i mean ive never limited my self....to what others say...i listen...i appeciate....i take in......i understand...but i do me...

its all mental.....

freedom is a state of mind.....

to freestyle is to be in that state of mind....

stay free

do u...playa...

My thoughts are that when a popper hears music, he or she begins to move and every dancer has tendencies or habits and moves in a certain pattern that sometimes is predictabe but the dancer is freestyling to the music. No dancer has endless moves, every dancer has certain things they like to do even when they are freestyling. I take mysef for example, when i hear music i begin to move in ways that people have seen before. I can start out differently but eventually you will do the things you are famiair with and many times you know what to expect from a dancer because of your reputation as a dancer.

feel me!

Alot of people will start dancing and get to a point where they think "Oh shit i did this move.. im repeating im repeating"

I say if you are gonna think.. think somethin that takes less time than worryin..and do it... thats the idea behind A&B concept...

peace

Honestly, i base all of my dancing around concepts. I feel that it broadens my dance and basically has no limits as to what you can do. Your "A&B" concept was one of the first that i used to do when i started, and that really helps with 1)patience and 2)movement diversity.

Another thing to think about is to not just limit the concepts to movement. You can conceptually look at the music also.

You can never run out of concepts, but you can easily run out of moves. Just something ppl should remember.

I gotta agree with pak on this one. once you start looking too far ahead you lose focus on what you're doing and that is grooving to the music. you start looking ahead and you start counting.. 1, 2, 3, 4.. and its no longer emotions being expressed.. similar to fighting.. you know all the moves and how to do them. but you have to do them without thought and just react to what the rhythm gives you..

agree with chippa

i feel concepts help your dance tell a story...

and these concepts can be freestyle... its up to you where your body goes.. but you can think of a theme to help you get there

i don't wanna say too much on it but think about what i said and your dance will evolve..!
