To introduce myself, I was born/raised in Hong Kong and it wasn't until 8 yrs ago that I started schooling in the United States.

I was first exposed to popping in high school by a Korean friend of mine, who showed me clips of nam nyun joon. Like many others, I was fascinated by the waves and the hard hits.

At first I took things causally, just messin around with my buddy, but when I got into College the dance grew on me and I started to experiment with all the different styles, in particular boogaloo. Sadly, at my university, no one was really into the dance. I tried teaching some guys, but all of them just wanted to learn tricks. It was hard to get them to feel the funk.

Like many others, I still have a long way to go, but I have acquired some foundation from a teacher back at home named Popping K. He was originally from Taiwan and is a real old G. It was such a relief to find someone who understood the essence of funkstyle.

I am sure my story echos many out there, especially from ASIA, who are as eager to learn as me. Just wanna say not to give up and keep this dance alive. Share the groove!

If there is anyone here who is from HK, please give me a shout out. I will be starting work in HK and would love to have someone to get down with.

Spread the funk!

nice to meet you tito...

I'm in the states right now as well... I go to Cornell University in upstate New York, been getting down with a breaking crew called Absolute Zero. (cause there is no better alternative)

Like you I used to only go back to HK twice, during the summer and winter breaks. Usually I hit up Studiodanz, where my teacher offers classes. If you get a chance, you should check it out.

Unfortunately, I will be heading back to HK working full time after May but I would love to get down with you if you happen to be in town. I will also be in NYC during the summer, hopefully visiting Popshop often.

Let me know wassup.

well my situation is totally the opposite.

I used to live in Cali and have recently came back to Hong Kong and started taking a Popping class.

Ive just taken a couple of classes, though, so Im still trying to catch up with everyone.

I take only 1 class a week because of my work, but I really love popping.

However, everyone else in the class have at least 6 months of experience, so I dont really get to learn the basics which is really frustrating.

I was wondering if there are some tutorials on the basics that I could practice myself.

lol I'm the opposite of you I guess
I was born and raised here on the west coast
I'm going to HK for my first time in my life
i'll be there from 3-6 months to check out the scene
I've only been popping for 3 monthish so i'm relatively new
is there a good place to learn in HK for beginners?

search around youtube for some tutorials on basics, just try imitating moves you see, it's a start at least... (this site already has a bunch of good ones) if your instructor is good, then he/she should be breaking the shit down and have you understand the components... that's how you take it to the next level and maybe catch up to your peers.

Don't get discouraged man! Just keep working on it. 8)

If you are just interested in hitting and waving, almost all hip-hop featuring dance schools have popping classes with instructors that teach mostly that. However, if you want to get into funkstyle, then I would recommend my instructor Popping K at studiodanz and some of the classes offered by Since 70's. (popping crew in HK)

Greetings to all.

I go by the name ah-vu, I was born and raised in hkg and am currently residing in Montreal, and have been here for the last 2 years. I picked up popping and began my training a little less than 2 years ago, prior to that I took some hip hop and house classes here and there.. I was a hip hop head growing up listening to beats since I could last remember. I love it!

After meeting and being influenced by numerous dancers in montreal like venom, monstapop, boombeast, namo, a.m crew and many more, I fell in love with popping because of its freedom for creativity and expression. Let alone its culture, funk styles and old school and new school (hip hop, experimental, progressive house, elctronica etc) fills my tank, it allowes me to express myself better through movement, as I'm sure the same applies to you.

I will be in hong kong may 15th to september!!! I would love to share, exchange skills, music, theories, and simply the love for this dance. I feel that hong kong really embraces the culture, be it commercial or non commercial, dance is celebrated in hong kong! The scene is vibrant and there is an underground community that I would love to meet! If there are any events, jams, get downs, please let me know as I would love to meet all of whom wants to come together for music and dance!

ah vu
