Trying to learn how to do animation or strobbing. Currently, what I do is move my arms then hit then move them alittle more then hit again. I bascially, try hitting repeatively at very fast fate while I move. Am I doing this correctly? Any excerise or tips would be cool? Also any evidence for getting animation in your chest and legs. I can seem to only do it in my arms.

in terms of strobing, you don't hit at all, they're a series of dimestops. if you're hittin quickly, then your tickin

p.s. to anyone that knows me: just because this guy's name is conor, he is NOT me (connor, with 2 N's).

word.^

Strobing and animation uses dimestops. No hitting no bouncing. Animation is mimicking stopmotion animation so you look fake or doll like.

Strobing looks like your under a strobe light.

technique is similar, the differences are slight but the outcomes is drastically different (i rekon).

Fast dimestopping i rekon is the hardest funkstyle technique to master. When done properly looks soooo fucking sick. Classic example of
Animation = U-min
Strobing = Salah

you definalty need to check out Flat top on youtube! that man is sick in strobing!

NOTE: This is the basic techniques from what i have gathered from my limited exp with Animation and Strobing.... so if any of yous see any holes in my stuff, please point it out!

Animation Basic Techniques
* Muscle Tension
- this is where u tense ur muscles so everything looks more stiff

* Fast (initial) => Slow Movement
- In one movement eg a Full extended back hand, the initial/start of the movement is fast then slow it down... doesnt really matter when u slow down from the initial movement

* Move => Stop => Move (also in one movement)
- Again using the Full extended back hand as an example... start with the initial movement then suddenly a stop (which creates a small jerk/strob look), then continue with the rest of the backhand.

* Dimestops
- a sudden stop (no hits)... if its a hit then is it still a dime stop?
- randomly put it somewhere, i use it to break up my animation

* Vibrating
- I have two ways of doing it
A: Tensing so hard that the muscle shakes (involuntary)
B: Actually do very small shakes, also has some muscle tension (voluntary)
- Add technique to backhand

* Strobing
- Basically a Stop (dimestop), Go, Stop, Go motion
- Some ppl say "u dont tense when u strobe", i say as long as u can achieve that stop and go movement, then do it.... anyways the look is slightly different from tensing and relaxed (though even relaxed there is a slight muscle tension)

Now try using different combination of these techniques to what ever movement ur doing (eg everyday movements, sports, wotever!)

* Character
- Copy a character from a stop motion animation
- Do your own (that will make sense with ur movements).

* Dancing with your animation
The thing i find the hardest is Portraying the feel of a certain music eg 'Knee Deep' compared to 'Moments in Love'

- (On a constant Kick drum and Snare beat)... i tend to Stop and Move on/from the snare... of course u can use the kick drum as well
- I also like moving on the last syllable of a word eg "Today" i would move on the "day", esp if the last syllable is extended ie "Dayyyyyyyyyy"

oh, waving is good to add to animation!

So when dimestopping there is no muscle tension at all? cause when i dimestop i do small unnoticable hits at the end of every stop to make them look more crisp but not make them jerky and hitty like...

Check it out this is what I do when i dimestop....im still noob so dont hate lol just trying to learn

No ur right. When I dimestop I do a slight hit. not hard enough that it makes my body jolt but just enough that it forces a clean stop.Pop'nTod also does this tech. So Conor I think ur on the right track by trying to hit , move, hit in rapid movments. Just keep refining that for now and work on doing it at dif frequencies.

Acording to Dre The dif between strobing and ticking is strobing ur miming something, ticking ur just dancing wif it.

I have also heard that one is dimestops one is hitting.

I think this falls into that grey area where dif terminology occures due to dif dialect of dif regions.

I say potato u say patato or something to that extent.

back hand? What's that Danis?

Danis Kool

Errr, you dont even know whats a backhand????

Its basically a slap but instead of using ur palm as the 'side of impact', u use the back of ur hand... hence 'backhand'.... cant get any simpler than that.

but how is that a dance move?

Its a dance move if you make it a dance move!

i would suggest not to seperate strobing and ticking...they are like syrup and waffle... they need each others jmho

no hit tick and hard hit tick both need dimestops and seperage frames and continuous movements...so i dont see the point of seperating them in terms...
and in order to maintain the seperate frames and continuous motion..ur muscles are most likely tensed..by themselves and naturally (not intentionally)

only a preference of addin the hit or not...depends on the feel of music that was given...

Conor,

what illusion are you shooting for?

you said animation, can you give an example of someone or something that you are after?

that way we can avoid jargon and get down to the nitty gritty so you can dowaditty in the city.

a few folks are right, jargon varies from place to place.

taco and boogaloo shrimp animate, is that what you are after?

peace

To be honest Snale, I am not really sure. I know what I want to achieve a very animated effect similar to salah. Sometimes, when I am attempting to strob/animate, I am accussed of dimestopping by my peers. Another problem I have is when I am hitting really fast my muscle kind of lock up and I began vibrate. Come to think of it, After paying close attention to my body, I realize that I flex my muscle very hard and when I try to stop and - I share involunterly

connor

if you could post a clip of "salah's" technique in this thread, it would help atronomically.

then we will break it down like a big cookie.

muscle by muscle, bone by bone.
