Hey Rory... got ur PM... just hadnt had a chance to respond...
first of all... this dance is a very freestyled (non-choreographed) dance. And you can do anything, it just takes practice :)
The easiest way for any of us to correct something you feel you might be doing wrong is if you can put up a video so we can SEE what you are doing. Most important with popping, is BE PATIENT!!! Everything takes time and pretty much 100% of the dance, you will not get right away.
I think most of the questions you have about "definitions" are somewhere in the forums... also go to the main page at www.westcoastpoppin.com and look up the tutorials section (it has a lot of GREAT videos with great lessons for beginners!!!)
Welcome to the site and have fun!

im going to tell you what i wish somebody would have told me when i first started.
Actually they probably did tell me, and i just didnt listen...
BEFORE you learn to pop, you NEED to learn how to DANCE. ANY kind of dance, it doesnt matter. Many that first see popping are so in awe that they want to take up (a DANCE style) like popping without really knowing how to DANCE. learning backwards.
In my opinion, it is VERY important (even mandatory) to have some kind of foundation of moving and grooving... straight DANCING with no styles, no rules.
Otherwise, you might learn popping (but it will take longer) and then once you can pop, you will realize that POPPING is a DANCE and youll have to go back and try to learn to DANCE with your popping.
My friendly advice would be NOT to get caught up in the eye candy of the dance likes waves, tricks, and blowups. to learn how to DANCE first and foremost, just put on music and GRROOOOOOVE out. Bust loose. you need to build your own personal way of moving to the music which will make it easier when learning harder techniques like popping or waving to feel the music and get on beat. (something that most new dancers find difficult if they have never danced before)
Those that already are good dancers have a unique foundation to add their popping to, making each dancer look unique. some poppers used to bboy, some might have house danced, salsa, hip hop, whatever... then they add popping to that.
Popping and the other styles are very technical, and it takes a while to learn and even longer to be able to apply to the music on beat. It will help you be more you, and find your style and hopefully make it easier to learn new things.
But that takes hard work and practice. Many people just want the shortcut and learn how to do armwaves and glides before they can even dance.
Good luck, and HAVE FUN.

Wow what he said really hit me hard. Like Rory im practically a newbie at this cept i have absolutely no training or anything in dance. Like what he said i saw alot of people doing bboy styles and stuff and i wanted to do something interesting, and i decided to try popping. But after reading prototype's comment i am now even more lost. Ive watched almost all videos in the tutorial section and theyre just all about arm waving or hitting. I've got like no idea how im supposed to develop my popping if all i do is just copy those videos. I was thinking maybe i should fine some sort of routine that i can use to practice but no idea where to get one. Any ideas or help?

before u make a vid for a someone to criticize:
practice these couple of things..
arm waves
body waves
hitting (start with fresnos real basic move u can move to beat with)
dimestopping
those are 4 super basic things that you will use forever haha
all of them seem relatively hard when u start but just keep doing it a little over a good amount of time and itll just become second nature, then put up a video... because if u make a video without properly practicin yourself everyones just gonna say clean up, practice more blah blah

I have been keeping both a video log (using the video option on my camera) and a small book that I note down two things that I am pleased about and two things that I am doing wrong. I normally write in the book after each poppin session I have. For example the last entry I entered was:
Positive
+ Twisto flex is starting to look sweet
+ Waves are starting to flow
Negatives
- Posture FFS stand up straighter!
- Need to hit with legs (keep forgetting)
This really helps as I have a quick look in the book (if I remember) and take note of what I want to fix
