Wow, didn't know Money-B and J-Rawk were bro's. My first b-boy tape had a battle w/ J-Rawk battling Wicket, that changed my life forever. His threads were ahead of his time.

Anyways, thanks for the insight/clips!

I feel like any tutting that is more advanced than just the basic "King Tutt" moves is built on shit that came outta San Jo'. I remember some of the battles between cats from the east bay and San Jo. I remember first seeing crazy tutts with dimension and intricacy from cats in your city.

And I know Shrimp came to the bay a lot with those rap tours and was always getting at fools cuz he loved the style, so I'm sure the Playboy Rob history is on point.

Very few crews kept their bloodline alive the way Playboyz did. That's why the younger gen, like you, still has the bay flavor when you go.

I had the same shocking experience when I saw everyone doing boog style. Not that I'm against it or anything but since cats in the bay didn't bust like that, i just never liked it. And even though a lot of people in the bay called the "dance" over all boogaloo, boog style was called LA style. I remember when I first found out cats were still popping about 4 or 5 years ago it was crazy, I mean CRAZY to see everyone doing boog. And then people thought you was crazy if you said that the shit came from the bay.

People still try to portray original bay area dance as primitive. They think it was just Fillmore when it was barely that. San Jose was absolutely innovating from the jump. It's too bad you dudes don't get out there more as far as repping the dance. I know cats got kids and jobs, and I know the dance ain't about "contests" or whatever, but you and Money B are top shelf. It'd be good for kids to see ya'll bust.

Thanks for the history, homie.

Thanks for the long ass post Dizz hahah.

But on the real I want to make sure no one reads into this wrong cuz Playboyz got love for all styles and all people. What my man is really trying to get across is the fact that there is a lot of history in the Bay that even the EBs (who we got mad love for) would tell you about. Money B and others have mad knowledge of the crews that came out of San Jose and how they influenced many styles like waving, tutting, ticking, etc. Also, Playboyz were the only crew outside of the San Francisco and East Bay areas to be accepted as strutters. They had their own way of strutting and mixing everything together.

Again we got love for all and we're not necessarily trying to get our 15 seconds of fame, but when people give credit about this culture we now deem "popping" learn the history and don't forget about everyone involved.

It's not true for everyone, but trust that people in the Bay got love for the Fresno styles and groups (like EBs) too and I know they got love for us. These are the areas where it started so BIG UPS and keep it spreadin worldwide!

Thanks Dizz for putting that out there! Adds to my whole basis and preachings on "there's MORE THAN ONE."

Cholos from SF's MISSION, San Jose, Antioch, Pittsburg. Richmond, even Fremont were ALL getting down to strutting and locking back in the day and I'm TALKING 70's!!

It was CHOLO gang bangers that walked up to me stopping/asking me "where you from vato??" but in a menacing way.

Had it not been for the boom box they were carrying, my ass would've been stabbed for walking in the "wrong" barrio. That boom box changed the conversation to "you got some jams?" "WHAT?? YOU STRUT ESE??"

The rest is history....and I'm alive to tell it.

Dizzy thank you for that post man...Insightful for real...Ever since I had moved to the Bay it was an eye opening experience for me to live in the birth place of the styles we love so much...I didn't get a chance to spend alot of time under any OG specifically and learn...But from what i could feel walking down 3rd street some time or driving to the wharf to watch Harry Berry and talk with him and drive down south to San Jose I could just feel the presence of alot of history and stories to be told. I grew up in NYC and didnt begin popping until 2003 when I moved to DC area...But even in NYC with Bboying and Electric Boogie you can feel the energy in the streets as you walk around...This is how I picked up alot of the Bay area Swag so to speak and it def helped that my lady is from Hunters Point.

Damon Frost spoke to me about the infamous battle between Playboy Rob and Shrimp when he was here...Him and Taco he said were watching it together and were dying watching the battle...I wish I could have been around to see that too....There are so many stories to be told...For Ryan and I we are true students of the guys that passed on movement to our mentor Junious " House " Brickhouse...A group from Denmark called Out Of Control with Mr Steen, Special Efx, Locksmith...and there teachers are Damon Frost and Anthony "T-Root" Edwards....So many folks contributed to this dance style...Again I thank you Dizzy for telling some stories of Playboyz...I hope we can share the floor with you brothas soon...Peace!!!

Yo! That Old School clip of Vic and Rob was nasty! Haven't seen that one before, thank you.

I got a question though, when did the term popping come into San Jose, as I thought people used to say "Strut", as I remember people telling me, lemme see you strut! And that wasn't even that long ago, maybe 1999. Don't get me wrong, other people said popping too, but I did hear that from some people around the Bay.

On another note, Jr Boogaloo always talks about how they used to call it strutting, when he was doin' it in the Bay as well, back when he was called "Jr Strut" haha.

I know its all terminology and what not, but some terms reffer to certain techniques that others don't so, I guess clearing some of that up could help...maybe not...

yo wut up nicko...to be honest the first time i heard of strutting was from Harry so i only knew of popping until i met him, he would never use the word popping though...he would either call it robotin hit'n or struttin...then again i was pretty much in the dark as far as San Jose popping went as well the only thing i could do b4 i met harry was ticking ,waving ,glides, tuts...i knew of money-b and tommy but had not worked with them or tlked with them till after i was studying under harry a couple years so as far as i know they used the word popping in refering to the dance and strutting in refering to the routines and of course harry schooled me on that fillmore...
