I know Slick is from Pomona, Fish from New York... Don't get me wrong.
What I'm saying is that they are the OGs who often go there to help build up the scene...

Again, you're taking an exception and try to make us think Japan is all like that.

Every country has at least, mathematically, one amazing dancer. France has Salah, Japan has Oba, Gucchon, Kite, the US have Future, Rashaad, Tempo, Frantick, Popula, etc

But this doesn't tell ANYTHING about the scene.

You should come here and see how creativity is prohibited. I mean, it's in their culture, in any aspect: if you're different, you break the group's harmony, so you're out.
Do you know Oba is considered a freak because he is too different?

There's this guy called Kei here, he has the CLEEEANEST boogaloo you can see around Yasuda, but his style is different, so he barely makes it through the selection when he goes to battle.
He often tells me "this country is all about looking like your senpai (elders), I feel trapped, I don't know which direction I should go".

You guys already have a name, and Japanese people like that. If for example Frantick comes to Japan (nobody knows him yet here, it's crazy), and come to a battle judged by Atzo and Ryuzy, he might pass through the selections, and loss the first battle, with judges telling him "I don't see any roll in your style"...

After Green and Salah won against let's boogie, a japanese judge came to them and told them what they were doing was not popping. I mean, come on...

That wasnt stretchs phrase, that was mine lol

Honestly your saying that your scene is bad and you envy our scene....but why?

You come to this site a lot....so you should see all the drama thats in the US scene. Everything looks better until you actually are experiencing that other scene and you see why theres ppl here who are unhappy as well.

Funkychybron is trying to explain something to you guys. Japan (and especially Osaka, tokyo has some exceptions as has been pointed out) does not have a popping scene in the way that we have one. What they have is an EB impersonator scene. The Japanese are involved with a baffling array of subcultures, but for the most part these subcultures were created elsewhere and then the Japanese faithfully recreate and preserve these subcultures following what they observe to be the original rules to their logical conclusion. For those like Funkychybron who would like to innovate this must be very stiffling. On the other hand for those who are just consumers Japan is like paradise, because they have taken America's consumer culture and executed it more perfectly than we ever could.

They have 100 MBPS symmetrical internet connections, can legally purchase a "fashion massage", pay a premium for the perfect strawberry or Yam, or buy a steak size hunk of o-toro for about $35.

They're things wrong with every scene. Im sorry to hear a judge told Salah n Green that they wern't popping, cause thats bullshit. Ryuzy is dope as hell, I seen him in Vegas last year, he got screwed over at HHI (me too, lol). Favortism of styles messes up common ground for many dancers unfortunatly, its to the point were you HAVE to check to see who is judging to enter a battle, and its a shame, its hard to grow from that. When I have the funds I would definetly try to throw events. Get judges with knowledge of styles across the board, so dancers are judged not on what they are doing (style wise) but how is being done. Oh, and France has more then Salah, lol. I saw the examples Chybron put and was laughing when I saw only Salah, hahaha!!

if anything, i think the scene in japan that's getting slept on is Okinawa. I heard of buncha poppers that i never ever heard of, but are really high level. And also theres Yuzuru!!

Funkychybron i understand what ur saying about the Japan scene. That sucks Oba has to be talked down like that. Always appreciated what he brings to the table. Hope he still does what he does. but every scene has its problems. And I dont kno, i think Japan is super high level right now. I mean... look at those kids dood. DAMN.

Well, since I'm French, it just sounded more humble to me to not write too many names. Yet again, I'm super critical to my country's scene too.
But that's another story

Well, yes, I envy your scene.
I envy Montreal, the US, Sweden, even the UK...

Why?
Because the OGs that I like go there. You can get the info with no intermediaries.
Plus, you guys live in a country where people understand that a "battle" is not a "friendly showcase".

That's another interesting point, but Japanese people have this thing called "egao" (smiling face). Everything in this country has to be done with a smiling face. Advertisements, sales, etc.
And, yeah, I bet you already guessed, but battle too, they have to be done with the smiling face.

Trust me, I've been living here two years, and having to participate to battles where no one gets into each other is boring as FUCK.

I mean, there is drama EVERYWHERE. I know some american dancers, I meet people who come from all around the world, I keep myself updated reading this board, so I know what's going on over there. There's drama in my home country too, etc.

BUT, at least, you guys have the freedom of dancing the way you want to. You might be cheated (shit happens), but people will have their eyes open enough to appreciate your style (because it's different).

People should stay cool when it comes to Japan. This country, when you come here only two weeks, you have so much fun, you see many hot girls, people are nice with you, so you necessarily come back home with a positive opinion about ANYTHING, including dance.
So to conclude, I'm finally not saying that the grass is greened on the other side, I'm saying that people (let's say 90%), who live outside Japan have a really really wrong opinion about this country, because there is no one explaining them how things work here.
And when you try to, they'd be like "you're wrong, this country is so cool, blah blah blah"

Japan gave us Kung Fu and Godzilla.

But America gave the universe Chuck Norris.

How can you compare that?

I'm an American, NRG. To me all Asians = Chinese and all Spanish speaking people = Mexican.

Obviously, I'm joking. Just made a mistake on my martial arts.

But either way, Chuck Norris trumps Karate and or Kung Fu.

But not ninjas. He ties them.
