Default is it necessary to hit both your legs at the same time

or is it ok to hit one leg on some beats?

I wouldn't say it's neccesary to hit both legs at all times...(you gotta sleep sumtime lol j/p)
I would say it's neccesary to learn to hit both your legs simultaniously

cool, matt, made me think to add some links to the signature as well, I mean, why not.

is it necessary to hit both your legs at the same time?

don't stress it, it's dancing. originators of this dance were not making strict rules for all the newbies to follow.

Wink Fine for Parking
