Choose the City UP tour! presents Saint Louis Story Stitchers, a unique brand of urban storytelling, featuring original live STL hip-hop, spoken word and story magic on public health issues St. Louis cares about, including armed violence. Pay tribute, join the party and make a difference. Bring positive change to Lou.

The programs provide fun, safe, and creative spaces for young people in St. Louis. Your support through attendance, donations, and sharing our story with friends and family is greatly appreciated.

All events are free and family friendly.

The program broadens and deepens participation in and access to the arts by targeting teens and young adults living in neighborhoods in the City of St. Louis that are 70% or more black, underserved, and underrepresented.

Pick the City UP brings the arts to the fore through a unique form of “urban storytelling,” collecting and reframing stories through the arts. A series of public performances and outdoor events in the summer and fall of 2022 will engage diverse groups of young residents of the city of St. Louis.

Lively public performances are family-friendly and promote understanding and civic pride. Local black artists, including top krump-style dancers, will create and perform alongside young black people aged 16-24, in a series of high-quality musical performances and dance battles, as part of the Pick the City UP tour, now in its 6th year. This year, Story Stitchers will include guest artists in a “Spotlight Series,” curated by merit by Story Stitchers artists, to raise awareness of the excellence of the Black arts movement and BIPOC in our region.

Additional public event dates include:

True Vine Missionary Baptist Church

8420 Hill Ave, Ferguson, MO 63121

5872 Saint-Louis Avenue, 63120

Author event with performance

St. Louis Public Libraries

1301 Olive St, St. Louis, MO 63103

Downtown Clayton, MO 63105

Pick the City UP Tour is offered to St. Louis residents solely through government and foundation grants. Most programs are offered free of charge to neighborhood or youth organizers or to the public. For example, in June, Story Stitchers will engage the public with youth performances and event booths at 4 neighborhood events.

Funding for the 2022 Pick the City UP Dance Battles and Tour is provided by the City of St. Louis Crime Prevention Fellowship for At-Risk Youth 2022, Lewis Prize for Music, Equity Impact Creative Reaction Lab Fund and the Bezos Foundation, the St. Louis Area Violence Prevention Commission and Regional Arts Commission.
