The Covid-19 lockdown in 2020 and the boredom of it all saw a boom in the number of social media users. From work to school, everything was online and it also created a need for entertainment. And in turn, this sparked a huge wave of challenges and trends that went viral online. For example, the accent challenge that started on TikTok last year and made its way across social media. Or the super hit Jugnu dance challenge that was a favorite with celebrities and influencers.

These challenges and more have captured the attention of social media users and taken the internet by storm. So, as we bid farewell to 2021 in a few days, here we take a look at this year’s top 5 viral challenges.

Vidya Balan’s song Lazy Lad from the movie Ghanchakkar was a super hit, especially on Instagram. The app was overflowing with reels of people dancing to the catchy song and social media users were simply enjoying the dance trend a lot. What is the Lazy Lad Dance Challenge, you ask? Well, people need to take fun, offbeat steps to the song’s catchy beats. Just like this SpiceJet flight attendant did and her video went viral online.

The Covid-19 lockdown has caused a flurry of creativity among people, especially in terms of online challenges. The accent challenge was one. It started on TikTok in 2020 and required two participants from different countries. Then both individuals should choose a word and pronounce it in their particular accents. Simple, right? Well, the trend was raging online and even Madhuri Dixit got in on it.

Speaking of dance challenges, the Jugnu challenge is still furiously trending on the internet. Badshah’s song quickly became a smash hit and is also part of every second reel on Instagram. The challenge asks people to groove energetically to the song and nail the hook step. For example, flight attendant Indigo Aayat, who danced to the Sinhalese song Manike Mage Hithe, signed up for this challenge and just did it.

Social media users are currently obsessed with the so-called iPhone lock screen challenge. From celebrities to Instagram influencers, everyone jumped on the trend as it went viral and released its reels. What is your question? Well, in the challenge, the participant has to use a filter that looks like a typical iPhone lock screen. They must stand completely still and create a wallpaper like illusion while the song Banna Re by Chitralekha and DJ Shadow Dubai plays in the background. As the beat drops, the contestant must prove it wasn’t wallpaper by dancing to the song. Tennis ace Sania Mirza has absolutely nailed it.

When it comes to viral dance challenges, Bijlee Bijlee’s is surely on the list. Harrdy Sandhu’s song mesmerized everyone with its super addictive and groovy beats. This is especially noticeable on Instagram, where users are totally in love with the song and dancing to it. Tanzanian boy Kili Paul shook a leg at him and even nailed the hook step. His moves caught the attention of Shweta and Palak Tiwari. Incidentally, Bijlee Bijlee is also Palak’s first music video.
