A new dance challenge has taken over TIC Tac “For you” pages everywhere, helping to introduce a new generation of users to a song from the ’90s that many people had almost forgotten.
TikTok trends often help music tracks reach previously unexpected levels of recognition. Many artists saw their songs rise in popularity after TikTok picked them up, creating an interesting relationship between the popular video-sharing app and the top songs of the year.
Even casual TikTok users will recognize the latest song to gain a foothold on the app. It’s taken TikTok by storm, with literally hundreds of videos attempting the same simple dance to the tones of Brooks & Dunn.
That’s right, one Brooks & Dunn song dominates TikTok. The popular country duo have never really retired – they have a series of concerts coming up in Nevada and the East Coast to close out the year – but they’re not as recognizable in 2021 as they were in the early ’90s. In fact, a number of more avid TikTok users, most of whom are between the ages of 16 and 24, have probably never heard of the musical duo.
The country group, consisting of Kix Brooks and Ronnie Dunn, released their debut album in 1991. On this album, comfortably nestled between the traditional country tones of “Cheating on the Blues” and “Lost and Found”, a single gem lay predominantly unnoticed, until TikTok grabs it, that is.
The past few months have seen “Neon Moon” become by far Brooks & Dunn’s most popular track, introducing a whole new generation to classic country song and inspiring a simple and addicting dance challenge.
What is the “Neon Moon” dance challenge?
Dance challenges are nothing new to TikTok users. Whether you participated or not, anyone who uses TikTok at any frequency has scrolled through a few participants in one viral challenge or another. The “Neon Moon” challenge stands out among some of the other popular musical trends currently flooding the platform thanks to its honky-tonk-inspired rhythm, simple and memorable dance moves, and addictive voice.
The song that covers TikTok isn’t exactly the same version of “Neon Moon” that appeared on that 1991 album. Instead, the TikTokers gently roll their hips on a remix of the artist’s 20-year-old track. DJ Noiz. The song is extremely similar to the original, with just enough added synths, drum beats, and distortion to modernize it.
Registrations for the “Neon Moon” Dance Challenge always start the same way. A small portion of the song’s instrumental intro begins each TikTok, usually when individual users reveal the country-inspired outfit they chose to wear for the challenge. A quick and sultry spin, paired with plenty of hip rotations, sets the scene, before the song’s opening lyrics begin alongside the somewhat simple but easy-to-remember dance.
As Brooks & Dunn chant “The sun is setting / On my side of town / This lonely feeling / Comes to my door,” the users begin the simple dance. It involves slow, mirroring hand movements and many of the aforementioned hip movements. Participants initiate another spin, paired with another round of hip spin, as the lyrics change to “The Whole World Is Spinning,” without including the last word in the line, “Blue.”
As it concerns TIC Tac challenges, “Neon Moon” is extremely simple. The dance does not include any movement that a layman would find difficult, meaning that virtually anyone can try the dance and look good while doing it. Not as good as those completely ripped up cowboys, to be fair, but you’ll be looking like a veteran line dancer in no time.
